Art Without Borders

Canadian International School of Guangzhou 2025-03-21

In international education, fostering cultural inclusivity has become essential. At CIS, we celebrates diversity, students engage in our signature artist-in-residence program, which allows them to explore cultural similarities and differences through art. Art here is more than a creative outlet; it serves as a bridge to understanding and embracing diversity. By working with artists, students learn to approach different cultures with an open mind and find their place in a globalized world. This enriches their artistic experience, broadens their global perspective, and strengthens their cultural foundation for the future.

Art: The "Universal Key" to Breaking Cultural Barriers

Art transcends language and borders, uniting people from diverse cultures. Through CIS's artist-in-residence program, indigenous Canadian artist Heather Shillinglaw introduced students to the history and aesthetics of Indigenous cultures. She taught them to use unconventional tools like shoe brushes and chopsticks while sharing indigenous philosophies, such as the healing power of nature and the significance of stories like the "Tiger Lily." This exchange opened students' eyes to new perspectives, fostering a deeper appreciation for diverse cultures.

Fostering Cultural Inclusivity: From Awareness to Respect

Under Heather's mentorship, students refined their artistic skills and immersed themselves in cultural diversity. By using unconventional tools, they understood that art, like culture, could take many forms. This encouraged respect for different cultural expressions and a deeper understanding of their meanings. Through sharing Indigenous history, Heather helped students recognize the shared human experience that connected all cultures, drawing parallels between Indigenous and Chinese philosophies and encouraging an appreciation for cultural wisdom.
