PYP Art Celebration
Today's PYP Art Celebration at CIS showcased a harmonious blend of creativity, learning outcomes and commitment to the PYP Learner Profiles. The event highlighted how art education within the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is seamlessly integrated with the Units of Inquiry (UOI), fostering growth and holistic development among students.
Grade 5 students explored the PYP Unit "Who We Are" by creating their own Zine.
Grade 1-4 students put on a "Zaha-Inspired Art Show" to reveal their understanding of "How the World Works."
Art Meets Inquiry
The exhibition revealed the unique way our art education in the Alberta curriculum complements the PYP's inquiry-based learning framework. Through their artistic endeavors, students engaged with key concepts and ideas central to their Units of Inquiry, allowing them to deepen their understanding and express their knowledge creatively.
Students from Grades 1 to 5 presented their artwork, which served as a culmination of their learning experiences. The art pieces reflected their inquiries into various themes such as sustainability, material properties, and the role of design in our environment. This approach to art education encourages students to make connections across disciplines, enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Growth Beyond the Canvas
The PYP Art Celebration was more than an art exhibition; it was a demonstration of the growth students experienced through the PYP framework. Art, within this context, became a vehicle for students to explore, question, and communicate their understandings. It empowered them to take ownership of their learning and to appreciate the value of artistic expression in their personal and academic lives.
At CIS, we are committed to implementing an educational approach that unifies art with the broader curriculum. By doing so, we not only nurture our students' artistic talents but also equip them with the tools to thrive in a complex, ever-changing world.
