We are honored to welcome Dr. Kathy Salmon, a renowned expert in the field of Canadian and language education, to CIS for a 4-week consultancy. This is the 10th day of her visit and we took some time to chat with her about her findings and tips for our multilingual community!
Meet the Expert! Dr. Salmon was a former Principal in Canada and served as an ESL Specialist for 50 schools. She made significant contributions to Alberta Education by co-writing the ESL benchmarks 1.0 and 2.0. She has just finished her Doctoral Thesis in Education, focusing on Teaching Effectiveness for EAL Learning. As a multilingual teaching and learning community, CIS is extremely fortunate to work with an renowned expert like Dr. Salmon who not only wrote the Alberta benchmarks in EAL but also has with years and years of extensive experience and knowledge running Canadian schools. Fun fact: Dr. Salmon is also a 2-time luge Olympian and an Ironman competitor! Working with CIS Teaching Team: Observations, Guidance, and Improvement The first week here for Dr. Salmon was very busy and productive. To date, she has conducted teaching and learning surveys, classroom observations and training sessions, and provided invaluable guidance to our teachers. Her expertise provided fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to enhance our language teaching methods, particularly in the area of English as an Additional Language (EAL) instruction.
It’s been great to have Dr. Salmon here at CIS to reassure us of our areas of excellence, and where we must improve for the better of our students. Dr. Salmon's visit, all the way from Canada, emphasizes our school's commitment to leveraging international resources and connections to enrich our students' learning experiences.
