Exploring the Winter Olympics in our Classrooms!

Canadian International School of Guangzhou 2022-02-04

In our ‘Class Spotlight’ series,

come with us as we visit our busy classrooms to discover quality educational experiences!

One of the many strengths of our rigorous Alberta (Canada) curriculum is cross-curricular (transdisciplinary) learning. In this approach, students explore relevant concepts by integrating the perspectives of multiple subject areas in order to connect new knowledge and deeper understanding of real-life experiences. A key competency for the 21st century is to ensure students have the skills and mindset to be transdisciplinary thinkers, as it allows for holistic learning experiences that are an essential skill for the future workforce.

We took the opportunity to find out about how our Pre-Kindergarten 4 students experienced deeper learning and thinking outside the box when their teachers collaborated to present different aspects of the same topic — the Beijing Winter Olympics — across various disciplines.

All About Winter Sports!

In English Language Arts, Ms. Emily started the ‘Winter Olympics’ unit by teaching students some vocabulary about weather and sports. In Guangzhou, we have tropical weather so it's almost impossible to practice winter sports here, which led to a conversation about the differences in weather conditions between Beijing and Guangzhou. Together, our Pre-K4 students discovered the art of short-track skating and figure skating. Even though we don't have an ice rink at school, students took off their shoes and tried to skate with their socks! Ms. Emily explained how to turn like a figure skater, how to jump and how to turn faster by keeping our arms very close to our bodies!

In Art, our little artists looked at the 5 Olympic rings, discussed the colours, the shapes and the symbolism behind the logo. Of course, everyone wanted to build our own rings!

In a STEAM project using Lego, our students started creating. The art project got bigger and bigger as their Grade 7 reading buddies helped them to create a big mural with colourful fingerprints!

In Mandarin class, Ms. Jocelyn introduced the two Beijing 2022 mascots. The students loved seeing the adorable Panda and Lantern come to life. They also practiced fine motor skills through some coloring with Bing Dwen Dwen.

Well, there's no Olympics without sports! In PE, Mr. Sam took our ‘athletes’ outside for a friendly competition, keeping everyone in the Olympic spirit! GO TEAM CHINA!
