Welcome to the Canadian International School of Guangzhou (CIS). CIS is an official International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) World School! CIS is also the first and only IB PYP school in Panyu District. In alignment with our status as an Alberta Accredited, Pre-K to Grade 12, International School, IB World Schools are committed to providing a challenging, high-quality international education to foster diverse and inclusive student learning experiences. In addition, we are very proud to offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses to passionate CIS students. This courses complement the Alberta curriculum, and is not a subsitute.

Canada (Alberta) Curriculum and IB PYP
We are proud to be the first Alberta Accredited International School (AAIS) in China (mainland). Alberta Education curriculum is the strongest curriculum in Canada and consistently ranks in the top 8 of all the countries in the world. By merging the IB PYP framework into the Alberta Programs of Study, CIS is placing a more intense focus on the true development of the whole child, preparing them to be world citizens and lifelong learners beyond school.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses
Advanced Placement (AP) courses is considered a global standard for academic excellence. AP courses and exam grades are used in the admission process in almost than 4,000 universities and colleges in over 100 different countries. AP courses are offered as enrichment and extension of the Alberta curriculum in High School. In other words, AP courses complement the Alberta curriculum, and is not a subsitute. Achievement is assessed through AP Exams in May of each school year and may result in course exemption or credit at the university level. In the 2024-25 school year, CIS is proud to offer AP Calculus and AP Physics, as two new course offerings. More subjects may be offered in the following years.

Holistic Education
CIS offers a holistic and student-focused approach to education where learning is valued, growth through diversity is encouraged, individual uniqueness respected and personal excellence is fostered by dedicated staff. Enriched programs, the latest technology and a supportive environment all contribute to the education of the whole student. Eventually, we aim to raise future leaders with core competencies that will equip them to be successful at school, at work and in life.
STEAM
CIS has invested in state-of-the-art technology for our students to work and explore with. All students from Pre-K to Grade 12 will work within the IDEA Lab, building on design thinking and constructivism embedded within their daily curriculum. Our goal is to help students become confident learners and develop the skills that will help them become successful in our ever-changing world.
Athletics
At CIS, athletics are an integral part of our lives. We come together as a community to celebrate the many sporting achievements of our students, whether it be under the Grizzlies banner, or individually. Talent and passion for sports is part of our culture, and CIS is fortunate to have world-class facilities that allows us to host many of these sporting fixtures.
Music
CIS offers music to all students from Pre-Kindergarten all the way to Grade 12 with a Secondary Wind Orchestra and a Junior Choir. During the school year our students have different opportunities to display their musical gifts, such as our Winter Festival, International Day. Moreover, CIS students are sharing their talent and love of music by hosting public concerts and joining Festive Tree Lighting ceremonies in Guangzhou community.
Fine Arts
In the elementary division, students explore art through the IB framework and Alberta curriculum, fostering creativity from Grades 1-5. Transitioning to middle and high school, our dynamic approach, also grounded in the Alberta curriculum, engages students in art through sketchbook work, projects, and critiques. Process-based work is further emphasized, preparing them for university and fostering experimentation, critical thinking and personal expression across various mediums.
International Mindedness
CIS is a true international community with staff and families from over 40 nationalities. We are honored to work with international Consulates and chambers in Guangzhou community, continuously providing our students with experiences of diverse cultures and traditions, fostering respect and a global perspective, thus enriching the holistic development of students and staff at CIS.

Admission Requirements
CIS welcomes all international families to apply for Pre-Kindergarten 2 to Grade 12. Students will be interviewed and assessed to ensure that we are able to provide appropriate educational program support.
