On the third week of May, some CIS students from Grades 4-6 were introduced to student leadership by participating in a joint conference with TIS Macau. The theme of the conference was “courage” and students participated in many different activities that helped them learn to be more courageous.
The event started on Tuesday evening at 5:30pm when the students from TIS arrived at CIS. We welcomed them to our school and had a nice dinner with them. From there, we went to the auditorium to learn a bit about what our conference was all about. Students were mixed into three groups with students of various ages and from both schools. We called the groups brave, bold, and daring – three characteristics that are needed to be courageous.
The students got to work right away – they were tasked with trying to find the others in their groups and introduce themselves. Next, we all dove into the pool for a refreshing swim and a further chance to interact with our new friends. The evening finally ended with a movie in the W Hall auditorium. The students went home at 9pm tired, but excited for the next day.
On Wednesday, our leaders arrived to school wearing their brand-new leadership t-shirts and welcomed their new friends at the cafeteria. We went up to the idea lab where Ms. Guzzo lead us in some 5-minute maker challenges. Students worked in small, TIS/CIS mixed groups to complete these challenges.
After the fun in the Idea Lab, students were placed into their brave, bold and daring groups and went to three different sessions to learn all about how to be a good leader. In the “Public Speaking” session, students learned about being courageous while getting up in front of others to speak their mind and share their opinions. In the “Be authentic, be yourself” session, students learned that we are all unique and it takes courage to be ourselves. In the “Be an upstander” session, students learned about being courageous and standing up for what they believe in.
We capped off the day with a fun game of capture the flag. Students were so excited to run and have fun with their new friends! The day ended with a group photo in front of the tree house, and then it was time to say goodbye to all of our new friends. The students all agreed that they wanted to stay and continue to have fun, however, the TIS students had a long journey back to Macau.
A big shout out goes to the 18 students in Grades 4-6 who participated in this event. They demonstrated excellent leadership skills throughout the two days and they truly were courageous. Although only a small number of students could participate in this event, the hope is to grow our leadership team and have more and more students participate in activities such as this in the future. It is safe to say that CIS is filled with the most amazing students in China and we hope to continue to host leadership conferences in the future.
