Many teachers do not teach subjects in isolation. They often use thematic teaching. Thematic teaching is a strategy that connects all subject areas using a common theme. This brings objectives or learning outcomes together which helps to make learning integrated and meaningful.
When you connect all subjects to make a whole, this allows learning to be connected to real life. Teachers design the curriculum, instruction methods and assessment around a pre-selected theme. This may involve making changes to the class schedule, combining hours due devoted to specific topics, organizing field trips, teaching n teams and bringing in experts. The students had to read, research and write about what they thought.
Mathematics was introduced with the same theme using curriculum outcomes in the math program. In social studies, the students could research the history of St. Patrick’s Day and why it is celebrated in North America and Ireland and of course there is art. Our students designed and created traps to catch the leprechauns, which you know is a fictional character.
It requires a lot of hard work and teachers working together. Another example of the excellent team work we have at the Canadian International School.
