It’s always very important for our students to learn something about traditional Chinese culture and we believe the Cantonese Opera can be a beautiful example of Lingnan culture. We invited Mrs. Feifan Wu, one of the most famous Cantonese Opera performers and owner of the Plum Performance Award and the Magnolia Award, to give our community a Cantonese Opera show at 14:00 on 14th September, 2018 in our auditorium. Here is some background information about Cantonese Opera:
Cantonese Opera is also known as ‘full-scale opera’ or ‘Guangdong full-scale opera’. Appearing in Guangdong and Guangxi during the ruling of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty. It is a performing art integrating singing, acting, reading, fighting, musician background music, stage costume and abstract physique.
The performers of Cantonese Opera are characterized by four basic types of performing skills, i.e. singing, acting, reading and fighting. Singing refers to the art of singing, including male voice and female voice. And acting refers to the art of acting, which is also called posture, i.e. physical performance.
In 2009, Cantonese Opera officially made it onto the World Intangible Cultural Heritage List, thus becoming a bright star among Lingnan intangible cultural heritages. In 2017, Guangdong Provincial People’s Government issued the Regulations of Guangdong Province on the Protection and Inheritance of Cantonese Opera, in vigorous support of the artistic inheritance and development of Cantonese Opera. Thanks to the policy-based care and support, the art of Cantonese Opera will inherit the tradition, get rid of the stale and bring forth the fresh, marching towards new peaks in the artistic field.
