This weekend, CIS welcomed nearly 200 Elementary students’ families to our Elementary Open Day. It was an opportunity for families to learn about the vibrant Alberta, Canadian education system. It also allowed families to explore the beautiful CIS campus.
More well known educational curriculums include IB and AP, however, the Alberta, Canadian curriculum has gained international recognition. In fact, the Alberta curriculum is one of the best educational systems in the western world. Alberta’s highschool graduates are among the best in the world.

CIS is the first International School in mainland China to be certified by the government of Alberta, Canada. Mrs. Tanya Thiessen, principal of CIS, presented our curriculum to all families present:
There is nothing like witnessing the excitement and delight of children experiencing cutting edge curriculum. Students who signed up for “experience” classes were divided into groups of 25. The children went to different classrooms or the indoor gymnasium, where our Alberta certified teachers were waiting for them. Our teachers offered innovative activities of science, sports, and art:
Each course is well-designed according to the Alberta Curriculum. For example, Ms. Gee used “Fraction Pixel Art” as a classroom activity. First, they were introduced to the concept of pixel art. Then, they created their own pixel art design using at least 5 colors. Lastely, students wrote out fractions based on the colors they used.
One of the learning outcomes in the grade 4 math curriculum is to demonstrate and understand fractions and less than or equal to equations. They also learn how to show pictorial and symbolic representations of math problems. The purpose of Ms. Gee’s pixel art activity is to encourage students to engage with fractions in an artistic, creative, and meaningful way.
The campus tour and afternoon refreshments provided an opportunity for families to see the food provided by CIS, and explore the amazing facilities. The CIS campus opened its doors to students and faculty in the spring of 2018. It is equipped with classroom air purification systems, an indoor swimming pool, basketball courts, as well as, an art studio, and dance and music rooms. We provide our students with the very best learning accommodations, and the facility is designed to help children reach their full creative potential.
Thank you to all the families who attended our Elementary Open Day. We look forward to having you be apart of our CIS family. For those that did not have the opportunity to participate in the Open Day, you are always welcome to contact our admissions office to make an appointment to visit the school. We look forward to seeing you!
