Saturday 15th September saw our middle school boys soccer team first tournament of the season.
The 7am bus did not dampen the spirits of the boys, who were super excited. We travelled to Dongguan to take part in the PRC Soccer Exchange.
With only 8 players and 37 degrees sunshine. It took a tremendous team effort. We lost the first game 2-1 against AISG 3s in a very close and exciting game, a good goal scored by our captain Jerry.
We then faced a very strong and experienced Shekou International school team, which also ended in defeat but a brave effort from our Grizzly boys!
This took us to our final game, vs SIS 2s in the fifth place play-off match. The game was one that will live long in the memory. An exhilarating match of attacking football where both teams gave everything. It took 39 minutes before finally a goalkeeper was beaten. Chris ran in behind the SIS defense to collect a through pass and smashed home a delightful strike to give CIS the win 1-0. This resulted in a very respectable 5th place for the team.
After only one practice as a team, their efforts were great and very pleasing from a coaches perspective. I want to personally thank all the boys for their commitment and team spirit and with more practices next week, we will definitely improve for the next tournament.
Saturday15th saw our Middle School girls make their Soccer debut as fulltime members of the Pearl River Conference (PRC) sports competitions. On arather hot day our CISGZ ladies were first to play VS The American International School of Guangzhou (AISG), a very well contested game with CISGZ coming out on top winning 7-1. Goals from Mary Xu (3), Lulu Khamis (3) andAisha Tsao (1).
After a 10minute break next up was Shekou International School (SIS), the heatwas starting to take its toll on our girls. They managed to keep the score lineto 1-0 at half time. After the break CISGZ were unlucky not to be ahead after hitting the post twice both from Lulu Khamis, SIS ran out eventual winners with a score line of 4-0.
The third and final game saw CISGZ play International School of Dongguan (ISD) in a third place play-off. Once against a tight contest with both school shaving plenty of possession and opportunities, at half time the score was 1-0 to CISGZ. After the break CISGZ score another 2 goals to ISD’s 1, final score 3-1 to CISGZ.
Finishing third was a great achievement for our CISGZ grizzlies’ girls consideringthey only had time for two practices before these matches. I couldn’t be moreproud of the way the girls played and behaved on and off the pitch, showingrespect to their opponents, coaches and the referees. Next matches: 27th September vs AISG, 10thOctober vs BSG and 13th October tournament at ISD.
