The love for reading is the nature of every child, whether it is at school, at home or on a trip. A story book has the magic power to calm the most dynamic child and drop him or her into the pages of a good story. This past Tuesday, CIS Grade 1A students went on a field trip called Love YOUR Library to the Guangzhou Library which in turned out to be full of surprises!
Upon arrival, our wonderful guide from the Library gave us a warm welcome by briefly introducing the basic information of Guangzhou Library. Then she knew exactly where the students wanted to go — the children’s book section at 4th floor of South Building. Once we arrived in that section, the students disappeared into book shelves, hunting for their favourite books, sitting down to read quietly and sharing stories with friends.
Some students carried three or four books at a time and wanted to finish them all that day. But time was limited so they turned to their teacher: “Can I take these books back? ” Luckily, the Guangzhou Library was well prepared for this situation and had already made a permanent library card for each student! With the guidance of staff, students had a chance to learn how to use the self checkout machine to borrow and return books. And yes students, you can bring home your beloved books!
After some exciting book exploration, students received another surprise prepared by Guangzhou Library and That’s Guangzhou Magazine: a class on intangible cultural heritage Press Flowers. We watched and listened to a presentation of pressed flower art by master Fu Qingjun, the only heir to this art form, which included explaining the history and artistic value of this art and then we had the opportunity to create our own! Our little artists got to work and managed to create their own art works.
There was one surprise at the end of the day. Due to a passport issue, there was one student that wasn’t able to receive library card. She was very disappointed. Knowing this, the staff of Guangzhou Library immediately collected her information and applied for a urgent card order for her and had it delivered just before the end of our craft course! Thank you staff of Guangzhou Library and Love YOUR Library, for your amazing experience and taking care of CIS students.
