With the fresh touch of spring, CIS had another successful Open Day with over 140 families in our beautiful campus exploring and learning about Alberta (Canada) Education. Thank you for coming and participating in this delightful event. And we would like to share the joy and information of the day to our CIS community.
For the Grades 1 and 2 students, our teachers prepared a creative English Language Arts activity. Teachers read students a story and then they discussed their understanding of and feelings about the book. Students then tried their hands at a craft-making activity to express their own interpretations of the book. Through reading and sharing, they were able to challenge themselves in English listening, reading and expressing.
The Grades 3 and 4 students had a lesson that focused on the following Alberta curriculum outcome: Students can demonstrate an understanding of fractions less than or equal to one by using concrete, pictorial and symbolic representations.
In our lesson students first defined what a fraction is, they identified different examples of fractions in the real world and then applied their knowledge of fractions to create a pixel art image with corresponding fractions for each colour used.
Students from Grades 5-9 experienced a lesson in flight! First all students came together to learn about air and aerodynamics as part of the Alberta Grade 6 Science curriculum. They got to know the forces that impact how a plane flies and then experimented with various designs of paper air planes to see those forces in action. We finished with a paper airplane contest to see who can master the skies!
An introductory to stick-handling activities for students who have never used a hockey stick before! Students were introduced to the basics of hockey, and had a short match where they can practice their new skills and ignite their hitherto dormant passion for the most Canadian sport there is!
Play-based Learning in ECE
In the ECE building, families had a chance to explore the amazing discovery centres in our ECE classroom and shared stories with our teachers, hands-on crafts and educational games! Everything in our ECE space was designed to encourage their curiosity and nature to learn while playing. It was truly a fun day!
Presentations in our auditorium and classroom were also eventful. Simon Chen, Operation Director of CIS, introduced the daily management and operations of CIS. Focusing especially on the kitchen management which gained a lot of interest from the parents in attendance.
Parents also attended presentations by our Principal, Mrs. Tanya Thiessen, and our Assistant Principal Ms. Kim Romyn. At each grade level, we use inquiry-based learning, which is the most important method in Alberta Curriculum, to inspire creativity in our students. All experience classes were designed to let visiting families have a brief idea of Canadian Education and to let interest trigger their passion to prepare students for a lifelong of learning.
Thank you to all the families who attended our Open Day. For those that did not have the opportunity to participate, you are always welcome to contact our admissions office to make an appointment to visit the school. We look forward to seeing you!
